Cognitive behavioral therapy based intervention to tackle internet addiction in youth

According to a study conducted in Germany, a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based intervention was associated with moderate success in preventing gaming and internet addiction in at-risk adolescents.

Adolescents participating in the PROTECT intervention had significantly greater reduction in symptoms related to gaming disorder and unspecified internet use disorder over 12 months, in comparison with control group (27.7% vs. 39.8% reduction), noted researchers. Participants in the intervention group took part in four 90-minute group sessions at school with two trained psychologists and underwent evaluation at baseline, 1 month, 4 months, and 12 months. Participants in the control group only received the assessments.

Previous studies had noted that gaming addiction was closely related to procrastination. The PROTECT intervention was found to be associated with a significantly greater reduction in procrastination. The findings from the study are published in JAMA Network Open… (Medpage Today)
